Permits for 4-Wheel Drive Vehicles |

Each municipality on Long
Beach Island requires a permit for operating a 4-wheel drive
vehicle on the town’s beaches. Permits are purchased at the
police station in the town where you want to drive on the beach.
You must present a valid driver’s license, registration and
insurance card. Please call the municipality for additional info
about requirements, to confirm the cost, and method of payment.
Barnegat Light: No vehicles permitted
Harvey Cedars: For information call the Police Station at
494-3036. The permit fee is $50.00. Street entrances for buggies
are at 83rd, Middlesex, Bergen and Essex. Beaches are open for
4WDs (with a valid permit) from Sept. 30 thru May 15, depending
on Beach Conditions
Surf City: For information call the Police Station at 494-1400.
The permit fee is $25.00. Street entrances are at 5th St. and
18th St.
Ship Bottom: For information call the Police Station at
494-1518. The permit fee is $15.00. The street entrances will be
given out when the permit is issued.
Long Beach Twp (High Bar Harbor, Loveladies, North Beach, Brant
Beach, Beach Haven Crest, Brighton Beach, Peahala Park, Beach
Haven Park, Haven Beach, The Dunes, Beach Haven Terrace, Beach
Haven Gardens, Spray Beach, North Beach Haven, South Beach
Haven, Holgate, and Beach Haven Inlet):
For information call 361-1000, ext. 203. The permit fee is
$50.00. Permits are issued 24 hours day, seven days a week,
however, cash and out-of-town checks are not accepted after 4 PM
or on weekends or holidays. A special six week permit for the
Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Tournament is $25.00. This annual
fishing contest is in the fall from October to mid-November. For

Street entrances: Coast Road in Loveladies; 31st, 42nd, and 66th
Sts. in Brant Beach; 79th and 106th Sts. in Beach Haven Crest;
15th and 34th Sts. in Spray Beach; Nelson, Scott, and Washington
Aves. in Holgate.
Beach Haven: For information call the Police Station at
492-0505. The permit fee is $25.00. Street entrances: Taylor,
Holyoke, and Nelson Aves., and Centre St..
A Special Word About Holgate
The Holgate Unit of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife
Refuge is located at the southern end of Long Beach Island.
Within the Wildlife Refuge no vehicles or pedestrians are
allowed on or near the dunes or grassy areas at any time. When
driving in Holgate during the permitted season (Oct.-May), please
stay on the hard sand, as far away as possible from signs and
fences. When the route to and from Holgate is impassable, please
wait until the tide permits proper passage; do not go behind
signs or fences. Remember, we are working to keep Holgate open
to fishermen. Please help us by obeying these rules.
Campers and alcoholic
beverages are not permitted; sleeping on the beach is not
allowed.
You are urged to keep the following equipment in your vehicle:
First aid kit, jack, 16” x 16” piece of wood, shovel, tow chain,
flash light, tire gauge, quart of oil, container of water and a
can of “Fix a Flat.”
